About the Role

We are seeking an exceptional Head of Preclinical Research to lead and shape our early-stage R&D strategy. This is a pivotal leadership role responsible for driving the discovery and preclinical development of innovative therapeutic candidates, from target identification through to IND-enabling studies.

You will oversee multidisciplinary teams, foster scientific excellence, and ensure the successful progression of a robust preclinical pipeline aligned with organisational goals.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership for all preclinical research activities
• Design and oversee in vitro and in vivo studies to support drug discovery programs
• Lead cross-functional collaboration with clinical, regulatory, and commercial teams
• Ensure compliance with UK and international regulatory standards (e.g., GLP)
• Manage external partnerships (CROs, academic collaborators, biotech partners)
• Build, mentor, and develop high-performing scientific teams
• Drive innovation and implement emerging technologies in preclinical development
• Contribute to portfolio strategy, decision-making, and governance at executive level

Requirements

• PhD (or equivalent) in Pharmacology, Toxicology, Biomedical Sciences, or related field
• Significant experience in preclinical research within biotech or pharmaceutical sectors
• Proven leadership experience managing scientific teams and complex programs
• Strong understanding of drug discovery and development processes
• Experience with regulatory submissions (IND/CTA) highly desirable
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
