Named Veterinary Surgeon (NVS)
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Named Veterinary Surgeon (NVS) to join a leading organisation within the animal research sector. This is an excellent opportunity to play a critical role in maintaining the highest standards of animal health, welfare, and ethical practice within a regulated research environment.
As the Named Veterinary Surgeon, you will provide independent veterinary oversight for all regulated animal activities carried out under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act (ASPA). You will work closely with researchers, animal technologists, and other Named Persons to ensure that all work involving animals is conducted responsibly, ethically, and in full compliance with Home Office regulations.
You will be a key advisor on animal welfare, providing guidance on clinical care, anaesthesia, analgesia, humane endpoints, and best practice in laboratory animal medicine. You will also contribute to governance processes, including participation in the Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body (AWERB), supporting a culture of care across the establishment.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide veterinary care and clinical oversight for animals used in regulated research
• Advise on animal welfare, anaesthesia, analgesia, and humane endpoints
• Ensure compliance with ASPA, Home Office guidance, and internal governance processes
• Work collaboratively with Named Persons, researchers, and animal care teams
• Support and contribute to AWERB discussions and ethical review processes
• Promote best practice and a strong culture of care within the organisation
Requirements:
• MRCVS status and eligibility to practise in the UK
• Eligibility to act as a Named Veterinary Surgeon under ASPA (or willing to gain qualification)
• Experience in laboratory animal medicine or animal research environments
• Strong understanding of UK Home Office regulatory requirements
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills
This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the interface of veterinary medicine, animal welfare, and scientific research while helping ensure the highest standards of ethical practice.
