Quantum Design Engineer
- Garching, United Kingdom
- Permanent
As a Quantum Design Engineer, you will be central to developing and optimising the architectures that make next-generation quantum processors intrinsically error-protected. Beyond the conventional goals of maximising coherence and fidelity, this role focuses on embedding error mitigation directly into hardware layouts and circuit topologies.
At this early stage of development, your designs will progress rapidly from simulation to fabrication and measurement. You’ll work closely with fabrication and characterisation teams to ensure that theoretical advances translate into manufacturable devices that push the boundaries of scalable quantum computing.
What You’ll Do
- Design and simulate superconducting qubits and multi-qubit circuits with a focus on high coherence and built-in error resilience.
- Develop innovative architectures that reduce reliance on external error correction by incorporating protection at the design level.
- Analyse decoherence mechanisms and engineer circuit geometries that minimise loss, crosstalk, and noise sensitivity.
- Enhance design workflows by integrating electromagnetic solvers (e.g., Ansys HFSS or similar) with circuit-level and custom simulation tools.
- Collaborate with fabrication and measurement teams to align design concepts with process recipes and test methodologies.
- Document, analyse, and iterate on results using structured feedback loops to drive continuous improvement.
Who You Are
- PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Expertise in superconducting qubits, circuit QED, or microwave quantum devices.
- Proficient with electromagnetic and circuit simulation tools such as HFSS, Sonnet, COMSOL, Qiskit Metal, or equivalent.
- Strong understanding of decoherence mechanisms and design-based mitigation strategies.
- Experienced in bridging simulation and experimental data.
- Clear communicator and effective collaborator across design, fabrication, and measurement disciplines.
