Study Director, In Vivo Pharmacology

We’re supporting an innovative organisation seeking a Study Director to lead in vivo pharmacology studies within renal drug discovery programmes.

This role requires someone who can act as a renal in vivo subject-matter expert, taking responsibility for the scientific design, planning, execution, interpretation and reporting of complex kidney studies. You will work closely with multidisciplinary project teams to determine the most appropriate in vivo models, study designs, renal endpoints and translational approaches to answer key scientific questions.

Strong hands-on experience with in vivo kidney disease models is essential. This is a Study Director role for someone who can independently lead renal studies and confidently advise project teams on how best to generate and interpret meaningful kidney data.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as Study Director for complex in vivo kidney disease studies, taking scientific ownership from study conception through to final data interpretation and reporting
  • Design and lead in vivo renal pharmacology studies, including defining objectives, selecting appropriate models, establishing endpoints and developing robust experimental designs
  • Provide expert advice on kidney study strategy, helping project teams determine the most appropriate models and approaches for target validation, efficacy and mechanism-of-action studies
  • Apply detailed knowledge of renal biology, kidney physiology and mechanisms of kidney disease to study design and interpretation.
  • Have hands-on involvement in relevant animal models of kidney disease, understanding their application, limitations, reproducibility and translational relevance
  • Direct the execution of studies, working with internal teams and relevant technical specialists to ensure studies are delivered to a high scientific and operational standard.
  • Own study data and conclusions, critically evaluating results and providing clear scientific interpretation and recommendations to project teams.
  • Develop and optimise translational in vivo kidney models to support preclinical drug discovery and development.
  • Advise on appropriate renal biomarkers, pathology, clinical chemistry and functional endpoints to assess disease progression and treatment response.
  • Communicate study plans, progress, results and conclusions to multidisciplinary project teams and senior stakeholders.
  • Use study findings to influence programme strategy, experimental priorities and progression decisions.
  • Work collaboratively with pharmacology, biology, pathology, biomarker and other functions to deliver integrated preclinical packages.
  • Mentor and provide scientific guidance to junior scientists and contribute to the development of in vivo pharmacology capabilities.

Essential Experience

We are looking for a scientist with:

  • Extensive hands-on experience conducting in vivo studies in kidney/renal disease.
  • Strong expertise in renal biology, kidney physiology and mechanisms of renal disease.
  • Proven experience acting as a Study Director or scientific lead for in vivo pharmacology studies, with responsibility for study design, execution, interpretation and reporting.
  • Demonstrable experience with animal models of kidney disease, including the ability to select the most appropriate model for a specific scientific question.
  • The ability to independently advise on renal study design, including model selection, dosing strategy, controls, endpoints and translational readouts.
  • Experience interpreting renal efficacy and pharmacology data and translating findings into clear scientific recommendations.
  • Experience working within drug discovery or preclinical development, ideally progressing programmes from early discovery towards candidate selection or development.
  • Strong understanding of translational renal pharmacology and the relationship between preclinical kidney models and human disease.
  • Experience working across multidisciplinary teams and influencing experimental and programme strategy.
  • Excellent scientific communication skills and the confidence to act as the renal subject-matter expert for project teams and senior stakeholders.


The ideal candidate will be a hands-on renal in vivo pharmacologist who can independently lead studies as a Study Director and provide authoritative scientific advice on kidney research.
