Barrington James partnered with an established Canadian deep-technology company to deliver a Chief Financial Officer for a critical stage of its growth ahead of a critical fundraise in Q3 2026.

The requirement called for specialists with fundraising-growth leadership experience, combined with the ability to operate within a highly complex, pre-revenue, founder-led environment at the forefront of technology innovation.

The Challenge

A Canadian deep-technology company was preparing for a critical fundraise in Q3, with a 9–10 month timeframe to secure a key leadership hire. The organisation had an established relationship with Barrington James, previously focused on scientific and engineering hires across North America and Canada, but this mandate represented its first external C-suite appointment.

The requirement was for a Chief Financial Officer to lead the fundraising process and operate effectively within a complex, early-stage environment. The brief specifically required candidates with proven fundraising experience on major US exchanges, including NASDAQ or the New York Stock Exchange.

Given the specific type of fundraising for these types of companies across the technology and life sciences sectors in recent years, the available talent pool was highly niche. This created a significant research challenge, requiring a deep analysis of financing activity and leadership teams across the market to identify relevant CFO-level talent.

Our Approach

Barrington James delivered a comprehensive cross-border search across Canada and the US East Coast, supported by a detailed market mapping exercise of a company with substantial fundraising activity across technology and life sciences over the past 5–7 years.

The search focused on identifying CFOs and senior finance leaders, including VP-level candidates, with direct fundraising exposure or experience supporting companies through major financial rounds.

Alongside technical requirements, a significant emphasis was placed on cultural alignment, as this was the company’s first external senior leadership hire. The successful candidate needed to integrate closely with the two co-founders and demonstrate an entrepreneurial mindset, strong investor credibility, and hands-on experience in financial strategy, cash flow management, and fundraising within pre-revenue organizations.

A key part of the process also involved developing a clear and compelling market narrative, positioning the business effectively to senior finance leaders who would need to transition from established organisations into a pre-revenue deep tech company.

Results & Client Impact

Following an in-depth alignment phase, Barrington James executed a highly targeted, research-led search strategy, systematically mapping fundraising activity and identifying relevant leadership teams across the market.

This resulted in the identification of over 100 CFOs and senior finance leaders with direct experience across relevant technology and life sciences organisations.

Each candidate was rigorously assessed through multi-stage interviews and detailed referencing, including input from former colleagues, hiring managers, and investors to validate both technical capability and cultural fit.

Within 15 days, a highly targeted longlist was delivered. This was refined within a further 5 days into a shortlist of six fully vetted candidates, all of whom progressed through a structured three-stage interview process managed at pace to align with the client’s timeline and pre-revenue constraints.

The search was completed within a matter of weeks, culminating in the placement of a Boston-based CFO with a strong track record of leading key financing processes.

Client Feedback

Post-placement feedback has been highly positive.

Since joining, the CFO has quickly embedded into the leadership team, building strong internal relationships and providing immediate strategic input. The candidate has developed a clear short-term financial roadmap to support the company’s strategic pivot preparation and execution.

Early feedback from both client and candidate has been highly positive, with strong alignment across capability, culture, and long-term vision.

This appointment has enabled the business to move forward with confidence toward its strict timeline, while also supporting its broader strategic ambition to establish a Boston presence and expand further into the US market.
