We were approached by a top player in Gene Therapy when they needed assistance in recruiting a new Vice President of Medical Affairs. As a trusted recruitment partner with proven experience in placing multiple candidates with them previously, we were entrusted to handle this strategic and essential hire.

The Challenge

With multiple layers of complexity, this challenge required specialized expertise to ensure the right hire was found for this role. The search was subject to confidential disclosure agreements (CDA's) so needed discreet and careful engagement with any potential candidates throughout the process. The new Vice President would be required to essentially build the Medical Affairs function from the ground up. So a proven experience in building and establishing teams, processes and strategies would prove valuable.

The position demanded that the candidate possess a comprehensive knowledge of regulatory environments across both the US and internationally (FDA & EMEA) as well as some experience across Rare Disease and Orphan Drug Development. The role also had a requirement to be on-site three days a week to help facilitate the building of the new functions and teams. Something that we needed to consider for any candidates we select.

Our Approach

We launched a comprehensive interview process that reflected the strategic importance of this position, we were involved in meetings with the HR team, Hiring Managers, CMO, CSO, CBO and General Counsel, before a culmination by participating in a board presentation and meet-and-greet session.

By recognizing the strategic significance of this position, we assisted with bespoke recruitment methods that were tailored to the company's requirements. With our already well-established relationship with the client and deep understanding of the client's goals and aspirations that align with the company culture, and specific needs of the growing function.

We launched a comprehensive mapping of the current leadership talent in Medical Affairs across Rare Disease and Orphan Drug Sectors, putting a focus on the executives who possess proven function-building experience. We reached out to our network across the Pharmaceutical Industry, whilst maintaining protocols that were put in place to ensure strict confidentiality. Assessing candidates based on their technical abilities, and capabilities as a leader. With this meticulous approach, we developed a targeted pipeline that shortlisted 16 exceptional candidates, with 8 advancing through to the interview process.

Results & Outcomes

  • The company completed their search on the first attempt, selecting an ideal candidate from our shortlist of 8 interviewees.

  • Despite the complexity of the search and extensive interview process, we were able to secure this leadership position efficiently and without delays.

  • The success of the placement meant the company could maintain momentum and build out its Medical Affairs capabilities.

  • The placement further strengthened our ongoing relationship with the client, reinforcing our position as their trusted talent acquisition partner.
